Top Takeaways: Getting the Most out of CSRworks 2018
Last week, we had the chance to host our partners, new friends, and YourCause team for two incredible days of conversations, connections, and collaboration. Our goal? To bring our Global Good Network to one place to exchange CSR’s best practices that can strengthen each of our abilities to affect change through corporate responsibility. If you didn’t have the chance to attend, you’ve always got next year! But in the meantime, we wanted to share this year’s top takeaways with you:
Global change starts locally. Many of our partners and guest speakers touched on this idea. You may have heard “think globally, act locally” before. The idea is to consider the global corporate responsibility goals that your company has and take action in local communities in order to start enacting massive change.
Be open to new programs among varied office locations. There’s a difference between philanthropy and strategic responsibility. Separate office locations within the same company might reach toward one cause over the other… and that is okay! Considering cultural and social differences in each office location around the world and allowing those offices to act within their cultural frame of reference, even if it is outside of your core strategy, will only strengthen your CSR program and engagement.
We’re stronger together. CSRworks is the perfect environment to come together with your peers to create meaningful connections, exchange ideas, share best practices, and troubleshoot. The combined experience is priceless. The collective brain power of the Global Good Network is incredible and the opportunity to learn from this group in-person can help every CSR practitioner to strengthen their program.
Collaboration is key to achieving the SDGs. There’s an African Proverb that says, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”. While there are many ideas published about how we can accomplish the SDGs, one thing they all have in common is collaboration. Impact2030 shared, and most of our partners agreed, that collaboration between corporations and their human capital investment is necessary to accomplish these global goals.
Increase the resilience of your programs with a business case. Building the business case can be tough, but it is critical to ensuring the longevity of your CSR program. A few points to keep in mind; CSR helps drive your business performance, consumers are looking at your businesses to do good, 89% of employees are looking to do good, and employees are more likely to stay with a company that has a sense of purpose. Overall the three things employees desire are a sense of purpose, local efforts, and knowing their company cares.
Gen-Z is working now, and they boost engagement. The influx of young people into the workforce shouldn’t be feared! Generation Z cares… about everything! This generation thrives on finding a purpose and are even more likely to volunteer when their community and circle of friends are volunteering too. Diversify how you engage your employees in order to better connect with this group! Your program can still engage your current employee generations while meeting Gen-Z where they are.
Tell your story with data. Data that is pulled in the right way can support your CSR story and create stronger messaging than ever before. While stories don’t need to be 100% based on hard numbers, employees and customers trust and identify with stories that incorporate it.

This year was the biggest conference yet and we were thrilled to share the stage with knowledgeable external speakers and the Global Good Network. We are so thankful to those who presented, our partners, and everyone who attended this year for contributing, collaborating, and helping us drive home the points above.
We heard our Founder and CEO, Matt Combs, tell the evolution of CSRworks. Matt shared how many things have changed for our conference over the past ten years, but the one thing that has remained constant is our drive to make the two days that we share with the Global Good Network value-packed, entertaining, and uniquely YourCause. We loved having you in Plano and can’t wait to see you next year!
