In 2016, one in seven Americans face food insecurity each day. Food insecurity is defined as the state of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. Although this epidemic is caused by a complex combination of factors, one fundamental cause of food insecurity is poverty. According to The Journal of Nutrition, food insecurity is associated to adverse health outcomes. Because food insecurity can lead to poor health or obesity for children and adults, it is imperative that solutions are presented for this complicated, recurring problem. Feeding America is leading the fight against hunger in communities nationwide.

Feeding America’s Impact

Founded in 1979, Feeding America is the nation’s largest domestic hunger relief organization. The organization serves an impressive number of people. Here are some of their statistics:

  • 60,000 food pantries nationwide and over 200 food banks
  • Served 3 billion meals to families in 2015
  • Feed 46 million people who are at risk of food insecurity each year (including 12 million children and 7 million seniors)

There are countless stories of Feeding America’s impact on families, including ones like Samantha’s.

Samantha’s Story

Samantha, her husband Cornell, and their 3 kids live off $22,000 per year. She works as a school health aide and is currently completing her bachelor’s degree.

“ With my new degree, I can earn more and provide a better life for my family. In the meantime though, we rely on the food pantry to help feed our children.”

The local pantry is especially beneficial for her family through the summer months because her children don’t receive free meals from school during this time. While Samantha is working hard to build a brighter future for her family, Feeding America prevents her family from facing hunger each week.

The Move Towards Healthy Foods

Last but not least, the organization is committed to providing healthy food options in all the food pantries. Today, 68 percent of food received in the Feeding America network is classified as foods to encourage healthy eating habits. The organization prioritizes providing fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, and lean proteins which aligns with the USDA My Plate Dietary Guidelines for Americans. As more and more studies show that food insecurity is a prerequisite for poor health, it is imperative to provide healthful food options to families in need.

YourCause is extremely proud to have processed $729,835 in donations and grants to this impactful organization. This is enough to provide 8, 028, 185 meals to people in need. To find a food pantry in your area or learn more about Feeding America, please visit their website.
