Champions of the Global Goals: Kevin Traub
I recently purchased my first home. It is the house I became an uncle in, will be married in, and maybe one day, become a dad in. Over the next few years it’s likely to receive bumps and bruises from furniture moved, dirt and slobber from my dogs, and a fair share of roof damage from infamous Texas hail storms.
The good news is that the bulk of the damage that may occur is repairable. Besides, it’s not my forever home.
But what if it was my forever home? What if this was the only house I could ever own?
Would I sympathize more with each mark and scratch? Would I pay closer attention to the health of each brick and shingle? If someone or something were threatening my forever home, what would I do?
Science tells us that colonizing another planet presents vast challenges and unless we discover warp drive, it isn’t going to be possible. In essence, Earth is our forever home. (sorry Trekkies)
Yet, for decades we’ve seen a steady increase in global temperatures, green house gas emissions, and ocean temperatures. Climate change is now affecting every country on every continent. Our forever home is under threat.
Goal 13 targets climate change and it presents action that the international community needs to take to stop it. As permanent residents, it’s time to take a stand and protect our Earth.
